SPETTRI was a five-piece band from Florence, formed by brothers Ugo and Raffaele Ponticiello in 1964. They had a fairly long career and released several singles during the height of the Italian beat era although their sound gradually evolved and by the turn of the decade they had turned to performing covers of songs by contemporary heavy rock groups from the UK and USA. The band also underwent a number of personnel changes during the intervening years and among the musicians who came and went was drummer Mauro Sarti of CAMPO DI MARTE fame. The youngest member of the Ponticiello clan, Vincenzo, joined in 1971 thus making the venture a real family affair.

Between 1970-71 the band had also written enough original material for a full-length album that was later recorded in a single session on 13 October 1972, with a sound that is rather primitive and badly produced. However, the album never saw the light of day until 2011 when Black Widow Records released a re-mastered version of the self-titled work almost on the eve of its 40th anniversary. It's a concept album that portrays one man's search for his inner self by means of a séance, although it's also an allegory on the selfishness and hypocrisy of modern society and the erosion of humanity. The protagonist's journey to the abyss is aptly accompanied by a dark atmosphere of heavy guitar riffs and Hammond organ that together sounds like a collision of BLACK SABBATH and DEEP PURPLE. 

SPETTRI had a good live activity but eventually disbanded in 1975; according to the album's liner notes the various band members followed different musical paths due to ''growing public indifference to refined music'' around that time. Describing SPETTRI as ''refined'' might strain the listener's credulity somewhat as the main appeal of this band seems to be characterised by its very defects, its rawness and its sheer exuberance.

Shadoks Music has rescued yet another obscure recording for our enjoyment – Souvenir Album by Strange. The disc features eight songs proper and four segments of other tunes recorded from 1974 to 1978, and more than anything highlights the songwriting abilities of David Chamberlain, the band’s multi-instrumentalist and singer.

Even in their hometown of Olympia, Washington, Strange was far from a household name, and never really broke beyond playing local venues. By 1978, as Chamberlain was putting the material together for an actual album, Strange had disbanded. Still, Chamberlain waded through tapes of old material, committing the best bits to a master reel, and then handed them over to a gentleman named George Yantiss, “who had a small ‘record label’ in his home,” according to the liners. Yantiss “mastered” the tape and Chamberlain distributed copies for free to friends. Yantiss’ work will never be confused with the studio mastery of, say, Bob Ludwig or Alan Parsons, but the roughness around the edges gives Souvenir an odd grace, like the photos your parents took with an Instamatic camera.

The music ranges from early Pink Floyd to Jefferson Airplane to Neil Young and beyond. “Somebody” is a sorrowful ballad, that brings to mind Bill Fay and Nick Drake. Chamberlain’s guitar solo is masterful, an emotion-drenched line that tugs at the heart. Pianist Robert Rensel and bassist Carl Dexter add some lovely harmony vocals, as well. “The Ballad Of Hollis Spaceman” is a trippy number that brings together Syd Barrett and San Francisco rock, with a fantastic guitar workout from Chamberlain and Tom Hackett – these guys are players! “Four-Eyes” is Strange’s “Planet Caravan” replete with bongos and drippy electric piano notes. Rensel’s vocal on “A Faced Dream” is a treat, imbuing the tune with his clear and musical delivery. Drummer Rick Rackleff steps to the mic, as well, on his own ballad “Rick’s Song,” and proves more than able to take the lead. Although the sound quality isn’t great (it’s a copy of a copy) “Lies By Poetic License” is a stellar track, given a magical boost  by Rensel’s French horn. “Twelve Boats,” the sole Hackett composition here, is another minor-key laden tune that’s got more going on than is easily heard (it’s an audience recording), but it’s well worth some deep listening to hear it all. Chamberlain’s “The Last Song,” appropriately closes the record. This gorgeous lament sounds like a lost Procol Harum track and could have been a huge hit given some radio play. It would make a great addition to a soundtrack, too.

I also know that the band toured extensively and regularly opened for The Allman Brothers Band. This band's two albums are worth a listen with the first album being the better of the two. It contains lots of jazzy instrumentation and the better tracks are Sea Rider (which has lots of good piano work), Sailboat Ride (which features some nice sax and flute) and Earth (which also has some good flute pieces and jazzy piano). The final cut It's About starts with some rather discordant guitar work. The first 45 was taken from this album but consisted of the two most commercial but least interesting tracks. There's more of a country influence on the second album, particularly to the vocals - a good example of this would be Ring My Bell, which was also issued as a single. Also of note are Blind Man's Buff, which is quite bluesy and has some good flute pieces and Tales From The Citadel for its spacey intro. which soon gives way to the sort of jazzy instrumentation that characterises both albums.

Buddy Helm (ex-Those Five) went on to play briefly with Frank Zappa and then Tim Buckley. Charles Dechant later played with the Hall and Oates band, with whom he has spent the last 15 or more years. The guitarist/vocalist Danny Finley went on to the Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys band and co-wrote many songs over several albums. Christian Ghandi has been missing many years, any info would be appreciated and Jim Neiman is now deceased.

Yellow Dog was a British based rock band from the 1970s. Founded by the American songwriter Kenny Young, who had previously been a founder member of Fox. This 70s act revolved around the talents of Kenny Young and Herbie Armstrong. American-born Young was already an established songwriter, having penned ‘Under The Boardwalk’ for the Drifters and ‘Captain Of Your Ship’ for Reparata And The Delrons. The latter proved highly popular in the UK, inspiring the composer to move his base to London where he met his future partner. Guitarist Armstrong was a former member of the Wheels, a Belfast group contemporaneous with Them, before founding a duo with bass player Rod Demick. The duo met up when they both joined Fox and enjoyed a period of UK chart success. On the break-up of Fox in 1977, Yellow Dog was formed and their self-titled album was issued in 1977. However, its brand of sweet pop clashed with the year’s endemic punk explosion. Andy Roberts (guitar, ex-Liverpool Scene and Plainsong), Gary Taylor (bass, ex-Herd) and Gerry Conway (drums, ex-Fairport Convention) augmented the duo on this promising debut, which spawned a UK Top 10 single in ‘Just One More Night’. A second album, in part completed with the assistance of Demick and keyboard player Peter Bardens, proved less successful and the group’s name was dropped soon afterwards.

In 1960 four brass players from Omagh – Ray Moore, Leo Doran, Billy McGinty, and Pat Chesters – started The Platters Paramount Showband. Recruiting country & western crooner Brian Coll, and changing their name because of the American doo-wop group of the same name, by the mid ’60s The Plattermen were a major draw on the showband ballroom circuit. From 1965 on they released a string of country and pop ballads including I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, and in 1966 - in an adaptation of Roger Miller’s England Swings - they paid tribute to the scene by singing that “Ireland swings like nowhere else can, swings to the sound of the big showband. Pixies and Freshmen, the Capitol too, maybe the Plattermen’s the band for you.”  

Times were changing however, and their music began to lose its appeal. In 1967 bass player Rob Strong and guitarist Alan McCartney joined, and the following year Brian Coll left to be replaced by singer Simon Scott. The Plattermen began experimenting with a more contemporary sound; while Scott would continue to sing pop and ballad material, Strong became the driving force in the group by singing heavier soul / R’n'B tracks. By 1970 they were being hailed for this new direction with the release of the Strong-fronted single Smiling Faces (a cover of the Traffic song). The band themselves declared in a magazine announcement, “In ’71 We’re Goin’ Kinda Heavy”, and when they released an album in 1972 it bore the legend “File under Rock” - the band clearly keen to prove they had turned a corner.

That album – actually their first, notwithstanding a 1970 greatest hits collection of their singles with Coll – was Old Devil Wine, recorded in Dublin and released through the local Dolphin Records label. It was in marked contrast to their earlier material, with mostly original songs owing a debt to the brass-led soul blues rock sound of Blood Sweat & Tears more than anyone else. The track African Wah Wah was credited to The Plattermen’s John Trotter, although it’s clearly a straight cover of Santana’s Soul Sacrifice (albeit spiced with the addition of Trotter’s violin), but this aside, the album has come to be very highly regarded among collectors of both Irish music and rock music in general. The fact that it has never been re-issued has caused it to become among the most expensive Irish rock records.

There are a couple of bluesy moves and at least one James Brown styled funker, but mostly this just rips from start to finish. The kind of album you wish all horn rockers were. Smoking guitar and great brass charts. The rhythm section never stops. California based group was actually known as MAX, and toured extensively with groups like Malo and Tower of Power. Album sports a fantastic drawing on the cover.

Foi um desastre financeiro para a banda, que financiou a gravação e prensagem. A banda se dissolveu um ano depois e durante anos a gravação foi completamente desconhecida. Ficou na escuridão do anonimato. Colecionadores de todo o mundo, desde o Japão aos EUA estavam pagando centenas de dólares por um exemplar. Classic American early '70s prog with complex searing acid guitar arrangements, flute synths and complex and vocal harmonies. An official reissue of a super rare album that was bootlegged on vinyl in the 1980's.

Documents Of Captivity' was composed as a poem set to rock oriented music. It attempts to describe the natural course that people take in unknowingly creating their own cages and limitations. There is also a realization from time to time that one may escape those personal restraints. The Documents are musical ones and rare meants to be communicative either with words or musical impressions. Since these communications are recorded, they are all Documents.

CD reissue of awesome US private press from 1973. This is a concept album of lofty standards and execution melding hard rock, psychedelia and progressive into a truly unique whole. Featuring one epic concept piece, the album employs a classic power trio lineup full of dynamics and subtleties. Comes with four bonus tracks, including a killer cover of "Eleanor Rigby" and extensive liner notes from guitarist and leader Steven Morris."

"The band was the original Thunderpussy. We recorded and pressed Documents of Captivity  nearly 40 years ago in 1973 with 1,000 vinyl record copies. Most of the records were given away and a few were sold for $1 to $2 which the band collected at performances. It was a financial disaster for the band, which funded the recording and pressing. The band dissolved a year later and for years the recording went unknown. In the 1980’s it was brought to my attention that the original albums had become a worldwide audiophile cult phenomenon. Collectors from Japan to Cleveland were paying several hundred dollars for a copy. That created a demand so that it was duplicated by an unknown and unauthorized company in Europe named Breeder which copied from a record album. Those unauthorized and low quality records sell today for more that $40....."

Sandwiched between his early days with the hard rock band Dust and later punk fame with The Voidoids and Ramones, drummer Marc Bell (aka Marky Ramone) recorded this one-off record with the short-lived Estus. A curiosity piece for big Ramones fans. Nice US 70's Rock/HardRock with strong songs, excellent guitar work (some solos are longer than any  Ramones track!!) and nice vocal harmonies, somewhat more polished than both Dust albums, where Marc Bell also played drums.

SERIES: THE ALBUM FOR ETERNALIZE

Josefus have continued to remain on the fringes of rock greatness since their late-'60s and early-'70s flash-fire of regional popularity. Highly Zeppelin derivative, the band did nonetheless have a unique trajectory — something in that Houston water for sure — that married the plodding British blues with a healthy dose of Texas swagger. Their chunky, downtempo dirges had a little funk on them and reflected the blues-boogie zeitgeist that was at work on other up and coming Texas bands of the period (Johnny and Edgar Winter, Bubble Puppy, 13th Floor Elevators and the pre-ZZ Top excursions of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill). Unlike some of those artists, Josefus never made the big time in a commercial sense. They straddled the line between hard rock and heavy metal but never firmly established themselves in either category. Perhaps this was their main fallibility at the time but years on, the band gained a considerable amount of respect from enthusiasts and collectors of the obscure end of rock. Hence, another reissue of Josefus' "recorded-in-one-day" opus, this one titled Dead Man....Plus. Italian reissue label Akarma takes up the mantle once again (having released the Dead Man Alive and Dead Box collections) and offers up the album anew, with a nice chunk of four bonus tracks, and extensive liner notes and photos. Among the bonus tracks, the ultra-rare "Get Off My Case" (recorded during the band's first studio sessions) is, by far, the most sought after — though, having any of this stuff available in a legitimate digital format is something of a miracle for fans who have long guarded their cherished Hookah vinyl editions. ~ J. Rare 1973 German Hung arian prog-psych record. A blend of Pink Floyd like space rock and progressive folk rock with flute, violin and keyboards this is a great album that really is filled with 'variety' from trippy muiscal voyages through folk to blues. The underlying theme is psychedelic improvistaion and the band are red hot throughout.

BANDA AMERICANA OBSCURA E QUE GRAVOU SOMENTE ESSE ALBUM!! EM ALGUMAS MUSICAS VOCÊS VÃO NOTAR ALGUMA SEMELHANÇA COM OS TECLADOS DA "IRON BUTTERFLY"!! A SONORIDADE GERAL É COMPOSTA POR VÁRIOS ESTILOS, MAS BASICAMENTE PODEMOS DESTACAR UM CLIMA WEST COAST PSYCH COM ALGUMA COISA DO HARD ROCK E GUITARRAS FUZZ!! VENENO RARÍSSIMO E QUE VALE A PENA CONHECER!!

A short-lived Los Angeles-based project. Their album has a great cover. The contents incorporate several different styles. All the music is written by W. David Mohr and much of it is heavy with lots of fuzz guitar reminiscent of Iron Butterfly. It ranges from heavy soul (I Just Want To Make Love To You); hippie pop (Leaf Clover); a sorta West Coast sound which seems in places distinctly similar to Fever Tree's San Francisco Girls; pretentious pop with lots of keyboards (Midnight Candle); gimmickry with lots of sound effects (Does Your Head Need Straightening?) to the very plesant After The Storm, which has some delighfful soothing piano.
